What a great surprise! On September 13th, 2018, we were invited to Casino Baden, Austria, to be on stage! The magazine “Genuss” awarded our St. Laurent Reserve ALTEN 2016 the Genuss.weinpur Trophy as “Best St. Laurent”. We feel very honoured. THANK YOU!

wein.pur Trophy:
The austrian “GENUSS.”-magazine tasted wines from all over Lower Austria! Their favorite was: St.Laurent Reserve Alten 2016

“Dass der Siegerwein vom Weingut Pfaffl aus dem Weinviertel kommt, mag nur im ersten Moment überraschen, denn die Roten aus dem Weinviertel sind auf jeden Fall eine Erkundung wert” – GENUSS.

Also 3 other wines were tasted and are awarded “very good” and 3 Stars:
Gemischter Satz Harmony 2017
Weissburgunder Nuss 2017
St. Laurent Wald 2017

The Best Sommelier of the World ASI tasted our wines and finds our Quality remarkable, in fact, 6 of our wines got amazing scores and commants, and our average is very high!

90 P. Gemischter Satz HARMONY 2017
“Bright straw color. Peppery and spicy nose with fresh white fleshed fruit, crushed apple and citrus. Good grip on the palate, medium weight with a fresh backbone, nice notes of fresh grapes and crushed apple, and a long and vigorous finish.”

90 P. Grüner Veltliner HAID 2017
“Bright light golden color. Pure and perfumed with floral hints, fresh yellow fruit and candied citrus. Good bite on the palate, medium to full with a youthful fresh bite, fine extract, juicy yellow fruit and good length.”

92 P. Grüner Veltliner HUND 2017
“Bright straw color with a golden hue. Youthful pure and fresh nose with pale stone fruit, peppery notes and lemongrass. Digest palate, medium weight with a bright freshness, pepper, ginger and spicy lemon notes with fine length and purity.”

92 P. Grüner Veltliner GOLDEN 2017
“Light golden color. Pure nose with ripe fruit like peach, apricot, plum and sweet citrus. Bold texture with a well-preserved freshness, a peppery spiciness with candied citrus, juicy apricot and a long, dense, peppery finish.”

92 P. Grüner Veltliner HOMMAGE 2017
“Light to medium deep golden color. Tropical nose of pineapple, apricot, grape zest and mild spices. The palate is dense and bold with layers of yellow fruit, pepper, ginger and citrus confit. Long and unctuous finish with nice purity and well-preserved freshness.”

91 P. St. Laurent WALD 2017
“Medium deep purple hue. Roasted and meaty nose with fine oak, floral dark fruit. Medium weight with dense fruit, fresh blackberry and cherry notes with finely roasted notes and a layered spicy finish with good persistency and digest dark fruit.”

This variety is a real diva in the vineyard! It is always an interesting challenge for me. Damson plum and strawberry meet spice and elegance in this wine.

PICTURES OF THIS WINE (.jpg)

St. Laurent is one of the most important Austrian red wine grapes, mainly for very high qualities.

The origin of this Grape variety is not fully known, but for us as a winemaker it is quite obvious that it must be somehow related to Pinot Noir. It shows quite similar in the vineyard. The berries of the St. Laurent grapes are quite close together and so a lot of hand work and sensitiveness is needed as this grape easily wrottens. The Grape ripens very early and this is where the Name Comes from – namely fro the St. Laurentius-day the 15th of August. This should be the day where the grapes start to get red.

Of course this is not exactly the case in every year, but it is a fact that St. Laurent ripens early. In comparison to Pinot Noir, the Skins of the berriy are a Little thicker and therefore we have a darker Color and more Tannin in the wines. To get a harmonical wine, we always plant St. Laurent on cooler sites, to have it ripen more slowly. This way, not only the sugar Level rises, but also the Skin ripens properly. “Cooler” sites means for us, we plant next to a forrest. The forrest cools the vineyard down quickly after a hot sunny day.
